FUN FACTS: Aptos is Ohlone, meaning "the people". Aptos is home to the epicenter of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake (magnitude 6.9). Aptos is also known for the "World's Shortest Parade" that is celebrated on July 4th, because the parade route is about .6 miles long.
HISTORY: In the 1920s, Seacliff Park and Rio Del Mar Country Club (today's Seacliff State Beach) were developed. S.S. Palo Alto cement ship joined the area in 1929 as an amusement pier with restaurants, swimming pool, and a dance pavilion. Cabrillo College began in 1959 and was part of the growth for Aptos. Today, Aptos is home to approximately 20,000 people (depending on what areas are actually included as 'Aptos.')
